Years ago there was a wonderful exhibit at Mia (Minneapolis Institute of Art) of the works of Beauford Delaney, 1901–1979. In the mid 1950s he was painting in Paris and ran out of canvas so he painted on a raincoat fragment. Also at Mia is another favorite of mine, a portrait by Degas painted on striped mattress ticking.
So, when I came across an old ragged lab coat that had "University of Minnesota Parking Facility" embroidered on the back...I could not resist stretching it and using it to paint an image of lab coats I came across. It was not original but an irresistible combo!
